Functions of the Remote Database Administrator

A corporate database can consist of any and all kinds of data, but it is most commonly thought of as the data required for the mission critical application. Mission critical implies data of great importance to the company, the employees and the customers alike. Without the data or a functioning application, it is expected that little or no productivity will ensue. It follows that the administration and control of this data be handled by a professional remote database administrator or DBA for short. 1

A remote DBA performs the following broad functions:

1. Following the design of the data architects, the remote DBA implements or participates in the implementation of the database and the database management system. In some cases, the system may already be up and running and the DBA has to go into maintenance mode.

2. Monitor and analyze system performance. The analysis will look for overall performance, means of data and disk optimization such as in majority writes versus majority reads, and disk usage to plan for future expansion. 1

3. Maintain and repair the system. Maintenance might require periodic indexing through use of the database management system. Using a daily automated system check will alert the DBA if there are any problems, upgrades or changes that need to be addressed. It can also encompass simply managing users such as adding and subtracting employees or changing access rights for existing users. 4. Implement and maintain security and vendor patches for the database. This is another of the very critical services performed by the DBA. Security must be restrictive. Writes to the data must only occur programmatically via the mission critical application or other approved software. 5. Develop and implement a business continuity and disaster recovery plan. This ties back to security and maintenance, but goes beyond both issues to the extreme. business continuity seeks 100% uptime. Using multiple nodes with an Oracle database allows multiple servers to be integrated into a Real Application Cluster (RAC) will prevent downtime if properly installed. This configuration seeks to achieve a flawless recovery when one or more of the processors or servers are affected. Business continuity and disaster recovery planning will be part of a larger corporate initiative covering all critical systems, not just the domain of the administrator.
